Transportation TIP List: Week of January 14th, 2018

This week, many states throughout the U.S. have seen cold temperatures emerge and snowy weather hit in full force. And with Mother Nature’s ability to impact each and every supply chain, our TIP List this week is a flurry of trends to help logistics professionals navigate their operations come rain, sleet or snow. From last year’s 3PL market growth to Canada’s plan for implementing ELDs – check out the articles below!

  • 3PL Outlook – Rising Revenue, Customer Demands: Buoyed by the growth of domestic transportation management, the U.S. 3PL market is expected to have grown 5.1 percent in 2017. One factor is the tighter carrier capacity resulting from hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria – when a great deal of transportation was required to handle emergency supplies.
  • Canada Maps Truck ELD Plan as U.S. Mandate Takes Hold: As the ELD era gets underway in the U.S., Canada is planning an ELD mandate of its own. A proposal being considered in Canada would require federally regulated truckers to switch from recording work time in paper log books to ELDs by 2020, mostly mirroring the U.S. rule that took effect in December 2017.
  • U.S. Retail Sales End 2017 on Solid Footing: Spending at U.S. retailers rose in December for the fourth consecutive month, capping the strongest year for sales growth since 2014. The growth showed a continued surge in online retail sales while department-store spending slowed during a key month of the holiday shopping season.
  • Supply Chain Managers Should Now Prepare for the Chinese New Year: Are you ready for the Chinese New Year? The celebrations last for two weeks and begin ramping up before February 16. There is no time to waste if you haven’t already started to plan – take a look at this list to make sure you prepare your supply chain for the 2018 Chinese New Year.

Despite the cold weather, what trends are you seeing heat up in the transportation industry?
